Last year was a HUGE undertaking for me and took up ALL of my time...literally! On October 6, 2012 I held the 4th annual CNY Cake Competition as well as had our first ever LIVE challenge! It was sponsored by Domino Sugar and was appropriately named the Domino Sugar All American Classic Edible Fashion Runway Competition. That's right...we had 4 teams that were made up of a college fashion program student and a TV celebrity cake artist. They were asked to create a unique dress design that followed the all American classic design style for a model to wear down our runway....but that's not all. It had to be made out of 5 edible products!!! They included SugarVeil Confectionery Icing, PhotoFrost Edible image paper, Callebaut Chocolate in any form, ChocoPans fondant, gumpaste and/or modeling chocolate, Get Sassie's Isomalt Sugar and our 6th surprise ingredient revealed at the show....4 hours into it....was Crystalized Flower Company with their beautiful sugar flowers. It was a huge task. They were able to complete 75% of their outfits before the show but the last 25% had to be done on site in only 8 hrs. The results were spectacular!!! This event helped raise money for Domestic Violence as the funds raised went to 2 local organizations - The Advocacy Center in Ithaca and Cortland Aid to Victims of Violence. We raised over $4100!!! On my website you can see pictures of all of the outfits on the Domino Sugar Event Photos Page at www.cnycakedecorating.com.

You can also see the unbelievable cakes from last year's show as well that were made in the theme 1950's Music!!!

Here are a couple of links to some videos of the events from the day!!!
This year's cake competition theme is "Animals in The Wild" and yes we will have another LIVE challenge this year. This time it is a cake challenge to support a local business. Four teams will be battling to have their cake served at The Wild Animal Park and Experience's Customer Appreciation Party!!! They will have 4 hours to complete their cakes that will be able to feed 500 people! Come out to support the teams and compete in this year's baking and/or decorating competitions. Early registration ends on July 26th but you can register up until September 25th. Our 5th annual cake competition will be held on October 5th at The Shops at Ithaca Mall in Ithaca, NY so make your plans today!!! Hope to see you there. Oh, and the 3 cakes that do not take first place will be served at $1 a slice to help support Icing Smiles organization.Juliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01335031335018488757noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4167660846896841085.post-44544063185689097822011-10-21T17:43:00.000-04:002011-10-21T17:43:34.051-04:00Wilton 4 week courses only $5.00!If you receive e-mails from AC Moore or get their flyer, check it out!! She was kind enough to send me some of her photos of the cakes she has made for her son. I am highlighting this students cakes this month. I love her creativity in each of these cakes. Don't be afraid to try and carve a cake even if you have had no formal training. This student shows that it can be done if you are willing to just give it a try. We had a great time at last month's 2nd Annual CNY Cake Competition at The Shops at Ithaca Mall. We ended up with 34 competitors for both our Cake Decorating Competition themed Nursery Rhyme Cakes and our new King Arthur Flour Cake Baking Competition. I want to thank all of you who participated in this year's events and those who helped judge, setup, tare down and run the registration, bakery and demo tables. Thanks you to all of our sponsors and a special thanks to AC Moore for coming up to be part of the event and for our fabulous grand prize. It is a lot of work every year but well worth it. We had a last minute substitute teacher for our paid class & the students had a blast getting to learn how to make gelatin butterflies, mold a fairy with gelatin wings and learn how to make their own templates! Next year's competition is already scheduled for Oct. 1st so block that date on your calendar and get ready for some fun and serious competition! Pamela Gotjen our instructor, works at AC Moore in Dewitt teaching Wilton Cake Decorating classes. She has an extensive background in cake decorating amounting to nearly 50 years of training and teaching. I wanted to share a couple of photographs of my finished pieces from the class. I made a pink tulip and a red corn poppy flower with a bud and baby poppy as well. I will be offering these classes in the future, so keep watching the class schedule for details!
Juliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01335031335018488757noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4167660846896841085.post-69803097492423280762010-04-24T18:30:00.001-04:002010-04-24T18:38:26.177-04:00Under The Sea Class Cupcakes!
I had a blast at last night's cupcake class. I taught how to make poured sugar coral, how to make frosting waves and how to make a fondant fish! Erica, my student picked teal as the coral color she wanted for her cupcakes and it turned out stunning. I have posted a photo of her completed cupcakes for you to see. She is amazing at working with fondant and made a quick mermaid (that one happens to be my favorite). It was nice to see my past student again and hope this technique serves as a useful on in her arsenal of decorating skills.
Juliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01335031335018488757noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4167660846896841085.post-83720172074666688512010-04-07T13:31:00.001-04:002010-04-07T13:37:32.909-04:00Under The Sea Cupcakes Class April 23!
This is the class you have all been waiting for, Under The Sea Cupcakes!
